Sapphire was named because of the numerous sapphires found in the area in the 1800's. Keep a sharp eye out as there are still plenty of gems to be found today. Of course you can always sit back, relax and take in nature’s beauty during the fall months with the changing of the leaves.
Found in Sapphire are three stream fed lakes- Whisper Lake, Hogback Lake, and Fairfield Lake. All three lakes offer recreational activities such as fishing, swimming, kayaking, and canoeing. Surrounding these lake are private homes, condos, townhomes, and timeshare condos managed by the Wyndham Corporation, a resort development company. Hiking trails abound, with some going into the neighboring Panthertown Valley, owned by the US Forest Service. Here you can trail ride on some of the 6000 acres. In the wintertime Sapphire offers day or evening skiing, tubing, and sledding. Be sure to check the sky schedules. We do have moderate winters.
