Lake Toxaway History...In 1888 George W. Vanderbilt purchased thousands of acres of land and started construction of the Biltmore Estate America's largest private home with 250 rooms. It has now become the most visited attraction in Western North Carolina. The Biltmore originally held over 60,000 acres but currently covers an area of 8000 including gardens and a fine winery. The building of the Biltmore brought additional entrepreneurs from Pennsylvania who settled in the Lake Toxaway area establishing the Toxaway Company. The Fairfield Inn, Sapphire Inn, Lodge, and Toxaway Inn were very large hotel projects. One of the owners, J. Frances Hayes, also had interest in the Toxaway Railroad Company that provided rail services from Asheville. The arrival of the railroad, creation of the lake, and opening of the Toxaway Inn coincided in 1903. An elegantly designed and decorated Toxaway Inn with central heat, private indoor plumbing, long distance telephone, and elevators accommodated 500 guests. French chefs served meals on imported china and dinnerware. The Dukes, Vanderbilts, Fords, and Edisons often frequented the Inn to enjoy ballroom dancing, a billiard parlor, bowling alley, boating, swimming, fishing, golf, tennis, riding, and hunting. Disaster struck on August 13, 1916 with 24 inches of rain in one day. Without a water level control on the dam, it burst sending 5 billion gallons of water over the falls into SC. The inn soon closed. In 1960 businessmen from SC purchased the Toxaway area rebuilt the dam and developed the area we know today as the Lake Toxaway Country Club. Today it is a fabulous resort focused offering family and friends a retreat to enjoy and live a wonderful life.
