Wade Hampton Golf Club LLC - Cashiers, NC 28717

The Wade Hampton Club, named after General Wade Hampton III, is located at an elevation of 3,650 feet just south of Cashiers on Hwy 107 S.

General Hampton became Governor of South Carolina in 1876 and then extended his service to become a US Senator as well as a Cabinet Member for President Cleveland. With the hot summers in SC, the General spent his summers in cool Cashiers.

After Hampton died in 1902, his niece Caroline Halsted and her husband moved to the estate, which they loved because it was a place for them to relax. The couple named the estate High Hampton in honor of the late uncle.

Eventually, Halsted’s heirs sold the estate to a group led by the industrialist and entrepreneur E. Lyndon McKee. Over time, the group transformed the estate into a premier summer resort.

In 1984, the land was divided into two parts: the High Hampton Resort and the Wade Hampton Golf Club.

Today, the Tom Fazio-designed golf course at Wade Hampton has been recognized as one of "America's Best Residential Golf Courses."

The shorter tees, which are sometimes referred to as the Chimney Top Course, are 5,120 yards. Meanwhile, the back tees, which are sometimes called The Fazio course, measure 7,109 yards.

Residents love that the course is walkable and amenable to golfers of all skill levels. It also offers breathtaking views of the surrounding mountains and countryside.

National critics tend to agree that the Wade Hampton Golf Course is top notch. For instance, the course was named as the "Best New Private Course for 1987" by Golf Digest magazine. Built within the last 50 years, it also holds the distinction to be currently ranked in the top 20 courses in the United States.
